Free Amigurumi Chicken Pattern: Step-by-step Tutorial

In this article you’ll find a step-by-step description and tutorial to crochet this chicken. This is a translation of the Youtube video tutorial you can find at the bottom of the page.

Amigurumi Chicken Free Pattern

To make these amigurumi chickens you’ll need:

  • 2mm crochet hook
  • A rest of red cotton
  • A rest of yellow cotton
  • White cotton for the chicken
  • 2 x 8 mm beads for the eyes
  • Hot glue gun

Crochet Stitches used in this pattern in US terms:

Chain stitch (ch) = Yarn over, pull through

Slip Stitch (sl st) = Insert hook, yarn over, pull back, pull through loop

Single Crochet (sc) = Insert hook, yarn over, pull back,yarn over, pull through 2 loops.

Half double Crochet (hdc) = Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull back, yarn over, pull through 3 loops.

Double crochet (dc) = Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull back, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through remaining 2 loops.

Single crochet increase (sc inc) = Insert hook, make single crochet, insert the hook in the same stitch and make a second single crochet.

Single crochet decrease (sc dec) = Insert hook, yarn over, pull back, (2 loops on the hook), insert hook in the next stitch, yarn over, pull back, yarn over, pull through 3 loops on the hook
Double crochet increase (dc inc) = Make 2 double crochet stitches in the same stitch

Bobble Stitch 3 (Bo) – 3hdc cluster = Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull back yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull back, yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull back, yarn over, pull through all the loops, close the stitch with a chain.

Start this pattern by the head

Magic ring, ch3, 15 dc in the magic ring, sl st in chain

Cast off

Repeat but don’t cast off.

Row 1: ch 1, insert hook through both circles 10 sc inc = 20 (wrong sides against each other), ch 1, now only work in the top circle 5 hdc inc = 10 sc, turn your work and now work 5 hdc inc = 10 st in the other circle, sl st in the first ch. 

You now closed the head AND created a new round you’ll start working in for the rest of the body of the chicken.

The new round you’re working in has 20 stitches

Row 2: Ch 3, (3hdc cluster,ch)*9 work the first 3hdc cluster in the same stitch as the ch3, (3hdc cluster 3 tog -You’ll have 19 loops on the hook before pulling though -, ch), (3hdc cluster,ch)*8, sl st in ch 

Row 3: Ch 3, (3hdc cluster,ch)*9, (3hdc cluster 2 tog, ch) , (3hdc cluster,ch)*8, sl st in ch 

Row 4-6: Ch 3, (3hdc cluster,ch)*9, (3hdc cluster 2 tog, ch), (3hdc cluster,ch)*9, sl st in ch 

Row 7: ch 3, (3hdc cluster 2 tog, ch)*9, 3hdc cluster, sl st in ch

Fill the body with fiber fill and sew the opening flat together. 

Tail of the Amigurumi Chicken

Work in the third stitch of the back counting from the back of the chicken.

Insert hook, pull yarn and ch 2, starting in the same stitch work (3hdc cluster, ch)*3

Turn work, sc, ch 2, (3hdc cluster 2 tog, ch), ch 3, sc, cast off

Beak in yellow yarn

In the head, count 3 stitches up from the body

Insert hook, yarn over, pull through, chain 2, hdc in the next stitch, ch2, sc in the next stitch, cast off

Top of the head in red yarn

Insert the hook in the third stitch after the beak.

Pull through the red yarn, ch 2, hdc, ch2, sl st all in the same stitch, sc, *(sl st, ch 2, hdc, ch2, sl st) all in the same stitch, sc, repeat from * 

Now hot glue the eyes on and you’re done!
